Conflicting perspectives
I think that one of the most important things I have learnt during the four years of studying for the IRMCert and then the diploma (Institute of Risk Management) was to shape my thinking by reading about the same concept from various and multiple sources.
I don’t know if it was a rule of the Institute or I created it myself along the way, but for every new concept I learnt about, I read a book, an article, a point of view.
And the next one, I chose according to the principle, the respective perspective to be diametrically opposed to the first source.
At first it was very difficult because, in general, one of the sources was the one that I resonated with.
Obviously, the other challenged my thinking.
And, quite naturally, I didn’t like that. I don’t think we like someone contradicting us, really challenging our logic, believes etc….
But this habit helped me in my role:
➡ To find a range of solutions, not just one, specific and aligned to the internal context of the business (business model, organizational structure, product)
➡ To define my way of thinking, my own point of view, not just an opinion given by citing some books
➡ To have courage. It’s really liberating to understand that your opinion can be valid, under the right circumstances. As in the idea that 6 can mean 9 for someone else
➡ To read more, about everything
➡ To understand that there can be valid opinions, different from mine and to accept them
Someone said to me a few years back that I am very opinionated. I don’t think he meant it as a praise. 😀 But I took it as one. And this is how I got to be opinionated.

One response to “Conflicting perspectives”
I just love your perspective about conflicts. In fact, I am going to confront someone today and I will let you know about the result.
